There are moments that rewrite your life entirely, dividing it into a distinct before and after. Experiencing the loss of a child is a grief that carries its own heavy, quiet gravity. In my years working in coroner investigations, I stood on the outside of other people’s darkest days, offering professionalism and order to chaos. But when tragedy strikes your own heart, no amount of professional distance can prepare you for the depth of that silence.

For as long as I can remember, the water has been my sanctuary - a place of absolute peace, freedom, and joy. It was a lifelong passion that always called to me. But after enduring such a shattering absence, my relationship with the water took on a deeper, more profound meaning. I realized that the place that brought me so much personal solace could also become a space for healing and protection.

Navigating the pain of losing someone has meant leaning into the resilience of being a mother and a grandmother, finding ways to carry a love that survives the unimaginable. Choosing to step into the pool as an instructor was a natural alignment of my oldest passion and my deepest purpose. It isn’t about forgetting the past; it is about honoring it. By teaching others, I am taking that lifelong love for the water and channeling it into a presence that protects, nurtures, and keeps families safe.
